Switzerland has agreed to return to Uzbekistan $ 131 million from the assets of the eldest daughter of the country's first president, Gulnara Karimova. This was reported on the website of the Swiss Federal Council.
It is noted that the parties signed a framework agreement on the return of funds to Tashkent, which have already been confiscated and may be subject to this in the framework of criminal proceedings against the daughter of Islam Karimov. The total amount on these accounts is 800 million Swiss francs, the Swiss prosecutor's office froze them back in 2012.
At the same time, so far the parties have agreed that Uzbekistan will be given $ 131 million, which was confiscated in 2019. This money should be used to improve the living standards of the people of Uzbekistan. In particular, we are talking about the implementation of sustainable development projects under the UN Agenda 2030 program.
In 2015, Karimova was convicted in Uzbekistan for extortion and tax evasion. In August 2019, cases were initiated against her on embezzlement of state funds and transactions contrary to the country's interests.
Islam Karimov was the first president of independent Uzbekistan. He ruled the country until his death in 2016. The new president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, had previously described his predecessor's rule as times of fear.
