US Congress banned from calling COVID-19 “Chinese virus”

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives of the US Congress passed a resolution condemning all forms of anti-Chinese manifestations related to coronavirus infection. RIA Novosti reports.

It is noted that the resolution contains disapproval of “all forms of anti-Chinese sentiment related to COVID-19”, including expressions such as “Chinese virus” and “Wuhan virus”.

The sponsors of the resolution called for condemnation of the use of such expressions and for the health of all citizens of the United States, regardless of their ethnicity.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” or “Wuhan virus”, which has outraged many civil liberties groups, who claim that such language can cause outbreaks of racism and violence against Asian Americans. The American leader defended his language regarding the virus's link to China. Speaking at the daily coronavirus task force briefing in March, he said they were not racist: “He [the virus] is from China. I want to be precise. ”
