Why the criminal case against Trump was closed

Smith argued that prosecuting a sitting president is contrary to the US Constitution and could undermine his ability to carry out his duties as head of the executive branch. Judge Tanya Chutkan supported these arguments, deciding to close the case, leaving only a theoretical possibility of its reopening in the future.

Chutkan noted that closing the case would not harm the public interest. She also agreed with Smith's argument that presidential immunity would not extend to Trump after his term in office ends.

It is unlikely that those charges will be brought again in the future, since some of the statute of limitations for such cases will have expired.
