The US accused China of aiding Russia's aggression: will the statement be backed up by concrete actions? Anzhelika Galesevich

US Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Wood said that Washington accuses China of supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. However, his words are unlikely to result in concrete actions.

Beijing and Moscow can “kill” any decision that is dangerous for them and put to a vote, since they are permanent representatives in the UN Security Council. Political scientist and president of the analytical center “Politics” Oleg Lesnoy told Channel 24 more.

Russia and China feel that everything is allowed

As the political scientist noted, the UN has long turned into a place for deep expressions of concern and stand-ups by Russia's permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya. The organization does not fulfill its main functions on Ukraine at all.

It is difficult to even remember statements that resulted in specific actions. Thus, decisions of the General Assembly are based on them in legal practice when lawsuits are filed against Russia. International courts also use definitions. It is also worth recalling the sanctions that are being introduced against the aggressor country, China and Iran.

But words alone against these countries are not enough. They know very well that words, especially those spoken on the sidelines of the UN, will not lead to anything, – noted Oleg Lesnoy.

Any decision that would hypothetically pose a danger to any of these countries may not be voted on. After all, Russia and China are permanent representatives to the UN Security Council, and can easily “screw up” the vote.

This is not a place for discussion. This place is just for statements, Lesnoy explained.

In his opinion, Moscow and Beijing are going crazy because they are not being properly ordered. They understand that they can do whatever they want, and nothing will happen to them for now. It is not the leaders of states that suffer, but the units, of which there are many, and they are happy with it.

It should be noted that the European Union added Chinese individuals and legal entities to the 15th package of sanctions against Russia, which caused a negative reaction from Beijing.
