The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel's settlement policies in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem violate international law.

This is stated in the opinion read by the President of the UN Court Nawaf Salam.

It is noted that Israel’s placement of settlers in Western bank of the Jordan River and in Jerusalem and Israel's continued presence there is “contrary to Article 49 of the IV Geneva Convention.” resources in the occupied territories does not comply with its obligations under international law as an occupying state.

What is known about the occupation of territories

Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 war. Israel considers the West Bank a disputed territory whose future must be decided through negotiations, and has annexed East Jerusalem unilaterally. The international community does not recognize this.

In 2005, Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip, but after the Hamas terrorist group came to power there, it maintained the blockade in 2007.
