Ukrainians do not agree to cede territories in exchange for a speedy end to the war: an interesting poll

Ukrainians are not ready for territorial concessions in exchange for a “soon peace” with Russia/Channel 24 collage

90 days of Ukraine's heroic confrontation with Russian invaders are underway. The overwhelming majority of Ukrainians are not ready to make territorial concessions in order to end the war as soon as possible.

This is evidenced by a survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, conducted by telephone interview in the period from 13 to 18 May. Thus, 82% of Ukrainian respondents do not agree to give Russia any territories within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine in exchange for a speedy end to hostilities.

Territorial concessions are unacceptable for most Ukrainians

The description of the results of the KIIS poll says that in the Western press one can still trace a certain call for “territorial concessions” from Ukraine in exchange for a conditional “peace” with Russia. Therefore, the Institute of Sociology decided to conduct a survey to find out what Ukrainians think about it.

Important!The survey involved 2,000 adult citizens of Ukraine who, at the time of the telephone interviews, were within the territories controlled by the Ukrainian authorities until February 24, 2022 (i.e., except for residents of the quasi-republics “L/DNR” and the Crimean peninsula, as well as those who went abroad after February 24).

According to the results of the survey, in Ukraine as a whole the results are as follows :

  • 82% of respondents against any territorial concessions in exchange for “soon peace”;
  • 10% suggest that Ukraine may “give up some of its territories” in order to achieve peace and preserve independence as soon as possible;
  • 8 % indicated that they found it difficult to answer this question.

It is noted that in all regions of Ukrainethe majority of the population opposed any territorial concessions. Even in the East, where intense hostilities are now taking place, 68% do not agree to give Russia any territories (19% are ready to do this).

But in the South, 83% of respondents categorically do not want to give Russia a single piece Ukrainian land (only 9% suggest this option).

Interestingly, among the respondents in the temporarily occupied territories, 77% were against any territorial concessions (18% suggest this option). At the same time, among those who left the occupied territories after February 24, the “against” indicator reaches 82% (only 5% of such respondents support concessions).
