In recent years, there has been a positive trend in Ukraine regarding Ukrainian historical figures, around whom there were heated discussions in society a decade ago.
Due to Soviet and Russian propaganda, some citizens had an extremely negative attitude towards Ukrainian historical figures. However, the situation is changing every year.
Ukrainians stop believing in the lies of Russian propagandists, because Russia's war against Ukraine clearly demonstrates how the aggressors skillfully distort reality.
Whom do Ukrainians perceive most positively
More than 90% of Ukrainians unequivocally positively perceive Bogdan Khmelnytsky and Mikhail Hrushevsky.
In particular, attitudes towards Ivan Mazepa (in 2012 – 44%, in 2022 – 76%) and Simon Petlyura (in 2012 – 26%, in 2022 – 49%) gradually improved.

Bandera began to like Ukrainians much more
Ukrainians began to treat Stepan Bandera much better. If in 2012 it was supported only by 22%, then in 2022 it was already 74%.
It is important that a good attitude towards the ideologist of Ukrainian nationalism now prevails in the southeastern regions as well. Even among those people who communicate exclusively in Russian in everyday life.
But the attitude towards Soviet leaders in the last decade was mostly negative and worsened especially sharply in 2022. Over the past 5 – 8 years, the attitude towards Lenin has deteriorated by half, and towards Stalin – three times. Now only 13% have a positive attitude towards Lenin, and 7% towards Stalin.

A total of 1,000 respondents took part in the survey.
Latest polls among Ukrainians:
- More than 80% of Ukrainians consider “ordinary Russians” to be guilty of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
- Ukrainian sympathies among foreign leaders are led by Polish President Andrzej Duda, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden. At the same time, the attitude towards German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has greatly worsened.
- At the same time, 98% of Ukrainians have a negative attitude towards Putin.
