On February 6, 2023, a powerful earthquake occurred in southeastern Turkey and Syria. Ukrainian seismologist explained the causes of the natural phenomenon.
In an exclusive interview Channel 24, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences Alexander Kendzera spoke about the causes of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
Causes of the devastating earthquake
According to him, the earthquakes that occurred in Turkey are the consequences of local seismic events. The deepest are estimated at 19 kilometers, he claims.
This indicates that all these earthquakes are cows (from 7 to 19 kilometers) and are associated with local tectonics. All distant earthquakes have nothing to do with it. Ukraine and Turkey actually belong to the same seismic belt. It was formed a very long time ago and stretches from the Azores, covers the Crimea, the Carpathians and then goes to the Caucasus, to the Hindu Kush,” the seismologist said.
As the expert explained, the seismic belt acts on its own and consists of a huge amount of relatively small boulders. They rub against each other, crawl on top of each other – they are always in motion. Where energy accumulates, waves form. When they reach the surface, we feel them like an earthquake.
Pay attention! Is it possible to avoid a catastrophe and how Ukraine and the world can prepare for future earthquakes – in an exclusive interview to Channel 24 Alexander Kendzera, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences, spoke.
What an earthquake in Turkey is known
- On February 6, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred in southeastern Turkey. Tremors were also felt in northeastern Syria. The number of dead and injured in both countries is rapidly increasing, rescue and search operations continue.
