Ukrainian refugees will be able to maintain their status in Germany until March 2025

The validity of the residence permit of refugees from Ukraine who fled the war and received protection status in Germany will be extended until March 4, 2025, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Friday.

On Friday, the upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, approved the German MBC resolution, the report said.

This means that those affected do not need to apply to extend their status of stay and no associated visits to immigration services are required, the ministry statement added.

According to Eurostat data, almost 1.195 million refugees were registered in Germany as of September 2023.

The decision to extend the residence permit was the next step after the European Council supported the European Commission's proposal to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens in the European Union until March 3, 2025.

It is noteworthy that the question remained open whether the renewal of residence permits would be automatic or Ukrainians would have to submit a certain set of documents again.

Meanwhile, in the UK, thousands of Ukrainian refugee families are at risk of becoming homeless. This conclusion was reached by the British Red Cross after conducting a study, The Guardian wrote.
