Ukrainian people's deputy nominated for the PACE presidency

People's Deputy Alexander Merezhko announced that he had put forward his candidacy for the post of President of PACE. He also spoke about what he wants to change in the Assembly.

Yes, the people's deputy from the Servant of the People party and a member of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Oleksandr Merezhko wants to become president of PACE.

What Merezhko wants to change in PACE

In general, the program of the Ukrainian candidate for the PACE presidency consists of three main points:

  • restoration of democracy within PACE and creation of genuine competitive elections. According to Merezhko, there are now “elections without elections” in the Assembly.
  • elimination of all Russian or pro-Russian actions within PACE. The candidate stressed that these changes must be inevitable and prevent a return to the policy of “dialogue” with Russia.
  • PACE must expand the human rights protection system. Systematic violations of human rights and crimes against human rights committed by countries that are not members of the Council of Europe, but which have consequences in member countries of the Council of Europe, should be actively countered.

Merezhko also made public a copy of the letter of people's deputies to the European inter-parliamentary organization on support for his nomination as a candidate. He wrote that he was sincerely grateful to his colleagues for their support.

I am sincerely grateful to my colleagues for supporting my decision to put forward my candidacy for the post of President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Merezhko wrote.
