This week the European Council is due to decide whether to begin EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. The day before the decisive summit of European leaders in Brussels, the Prime Minister of Hungary spoke about our state’s membership in the European Union.

Prime Minister of Hungary Victor Orban continues to oppose the start of negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the European Union. A day before the decisive summit of EU leaders in Brussels, he repeated his position.

Orban spoke out against Ukraine's accession to the EU

The Hungarian head of government cynically offers to provide everything except membership.

The European Union is preparing to make a terrible mistake, and it must be prevented – even if 26 (EU members – Channel 24) want to do it, and only we are against it, said Orban.

Prime Minister Hungary argues that opening Ukraine's path to membership will undermine confidence in the bloc, so membership must be taken off the agenda. He assures that Hungary will continue to insist on this, so this issue is not worth serious discussion.

At the same time, during parliamentary debates, Orbán complained that attracting of our country to the seven-year budget would mean additional costs of 190 billion euros. According to him, Ukraine would receive 10 times more than Hungary due to agricultural subsidies.

Given the figures, Ukraine's accession to the EU “absurd, funny and frivolous,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Orban also said that the time has not yet come for Ukraine to join the EU. He said that Ukraine's membership in the EU would destroy Hungary.

What will Slovakia's actions be like

Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico said that he considers Ukraine unprepared to begin negotiations on accession to the EU, but Bratislava will not block this decision at the summit of EU leaders on December 14.

< p>Before this, Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar also stated that Bratislava is ready to support the decision to open negotiations.

Viktor Orban blocks Ukraine's accession to the EU: what is known

  • On December 1, Viktor Orban once again made a statement about Ukraine’s membership in the EU. Even then, he said that Hungary would block the decision. Orban also said that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU do not meet the interests of Hungary.
  • On December 4, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again called for the decision regarding Ukraine on the start of accession negotiations. He even wrote a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. In addition, Orban also called for decisions on macro-financial assistance to Ukraine not to be put on the agenda. The Hungarian Prime Minister states that such decisions are allegedly “unfounded.”
  • As a result, the EU has still not agreed on a common position on opening negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. The historic European Council meeting will take place on Thursday and Friday this week. Brussels does not rule out that the meeting could drag on until Saturday. At present, the ambassadors of the EU member states have not been able to reach a joint decision on those on the agenda of the meeting.
