The new government of Slovakia was headed by Robert Fico, who has repeatedly made anti-Ukrainian statements. However, his rhetoric is unlikely to match political decisions.

Political scientist from Slovakia Alexander Duleba explained to Channel 24 that the new prime minister will not be able to seriously impede aid to Ukraine. Particularly because Slovakia has obligations to other EU countries.

“He says that “not a single shell for Ukraine.” The reality is that Slovakia is set up to produce shells for Ukraine. This year there will be approximately 50 thousand shells, and next year and beyond it will grow by 150 thousand,” Duleba noted.

In addition, production of Zuzana 2 howitzers is underway in Slovakia. They were ordered by the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark to then supply them to Ukraine.

Fico subsequently clarified his position. They say that the government will not give Ukraine only Soviet-style shells and equipment from warehouses.

Macro-financial assistance to Ukraine

An EU summit will take place in December, at which, in particular, they will consider the allocation of assistance to Ukraine for four years in the amount of 50 billion euros.

Fico said that he will not block it. “He has his own conditions,” Duleba stated.

The first condition is that the money should also be used to develop cross-border infrastructure between Ukraine and Slovakia. However, there is already a Connecting Europe Facility program that allows reconstruction to begin today.

The second condition is that Slovak companies have access to tenders when the reconstruction processes begin in Ukraine. But this is already obvious.

Sanctions against Russia

For now, any Slovak government would be against anti-Russian sanctions, because the country has not yet resolved the issue of fuel replacement.

We still use Russian fuel,” Duleba explained.

Apart from this point, Slovakia generally has a pro-Ukrainian position. But this does not mean that it will remain unchanged.
