Ukraine reacted to the dissolution of the UN mission on the terrorist attack in Yelenovka

On January 5, the UN disbanded the mission, which was supposed to establish the circumstances of the murder by Russians of dozens of Ukrainian prisoners in Yelenovka. They did this due to the lack of security guarantees needed to deploy the mission to the crime scene.

In Ukraine, such a decision was called a demonstration of the intermediary-neutral position of the Organization. This was told by BP Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets on the air of the telethon, Channel 24 reports.

The inefficiency has been known for a long time

The creation of a special mission, which was supposed to investigate the Russian terrorist attack in Yelenovka, was previously announced by UN Secretary General António Guterres on the background of his arrival in Lvov. However, then three people were appointed from Brazil, Iceland and Nigeria, who, according to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, had a “very positive attitude towards the Russian Federation”, which was unacceptable.

Also, the ineffectiveness of this mission was manifested in its passivity. So, Dmitry Lubinets said that Ukraine:

  • sent official requests to the UN to clarify the progress of the mission,
  • Dmitry Lubinets initiated online meetings,
  • was ready to present Ukraine's evidence of Russia's guilt.

However, according to him, nothing happened for 5 months.

No condemnation of Russia

After that, at a press conference, the UN Secretary General announced the dissolution of the mission. And at the same time, there was no condemnation of Russia and no analysis of its actions was made.

Once again, in my opinion, unfortunately, we have seen the mediating neutral position of the UN. Not a word of condemnation of the Russian side, which did everything to prevent this international mission from going there. Therefore, in my opinion, if you have already created (the mission – Channel 24), then at least do some work, – said Dmitry Lubinets.

According to the ombudsman, if the UN did not receive security guarantees for the admission of international experts to Yelenovka, then it had to make a corresponding statement. Namely, “to put it bluntly: Russia did not let us in, we condemn it.”

What is known about the terrorist attack in Yelenovka

  • On the night of July 29, a powerful explosion thundered on the territory of correctional colony No. 120 in Yelenovka. The captured Ukrainian servicemen who were in the isolation ward died.
  • 50 casualties were reported. How many Ukrainian servicemen were wounded is unknown.
  • At the same time, the “workers” of the colony were not injured. The Russians cynically blamed the tragedy on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who allegedly shot the colony from HIMARS.
  • However, experts are convinced that these were not GMLRS shells used by the Ukrainian army. The explosion was caused by a thermobaric weapon, which is in service with the invaders. In particular, this was stated by Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin.
