Sahakyan told what to expect from the meeting between Biden and Xi / Getty Images On November 15, US President Joe Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco. During the meeting, issues important for Ukraine will be discussed. Political scientist Oleg Sahakyan told Channel 24 about this, noting that the meeting between Biden and Xi should not be perceived through the prism of “whether they will talk about Ukraine.” Every issue that the leaders of the United States and China will discuss will in one way or another affect Kyiv. As Sahakyan emphasized, today Ukraine is part of three confrontations in the world. First of all, we are talking about the Russian-Ukrainian war. The second is the opposition to Russia and its desire to build the world on the forces of the right, and not on the force of law. Third, confrontation with Russia as one of the countries that is trying to follow the path of dictatorship rather than democracy. We understand that Ukraine is part of these three confrontations. The conversation about non-escalation and mechanisms of contacts between the US and Chinese militaries is, in particular, about Ukraine. A conversation about nuclear security, the non-use of nuclear weapons and nuclear blackmail… The word “Ukraine” may not be heard there, but it will also be a conversation about Ukraine. And this will be a conversation that will influence Ukraine,” Sahakyan said. The conversation between Xi and Biden will come down to several “genders.” First of all, issues on which there is consensus – nuclear security, de-escalation mechanisms. The second is issues of competition and prohibited competition mechanisms that they agree not to use. The third is the field of discrepancies. In the area of differences, the United States and China cannot yet agree and compete today. These issues are translated into the plane of conditional hostility. And this is the most painful thing for the rest of the world. Especially for the Global South. These questions are polarizing and require determining which “chair” one is sitting on. These are issues of democracy, free market, partly sanctions policy and other topics, including cooperation in the field of high technology,” Sahakyan noted.
