Ukraine has initiated a discussion with NATO partner countries in order to begin now to discuss the results of the Alliance summit, which will take place next summer.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba spoke about this in an interview with the host of the Unified News telethon Vadym Karpyak.

Kuleba was asked what his expectations are from the NATO summit in Washington, which will take place in July 2024.

— We have maximum expectations, but only now have we started talking with our partners about Washington’s results. This discussion was initiated by Ukraine. We came out with the position that the sooner we start talking, the better the results will be. I won’t reveal details yet, because all conversations are at an early stage, — said the minister.

The Foreign Minister says that due to the fact that the summit will be held in the US capital, it is important for Ukraine to hear the opinion of its American colleagues.

Dmitry Kuleba also remembered the NATO summit in Vilnius, which took place in the summer of 2023. According to him, there is a result from the summit, but a “sediment remains”.

— I (asked Ukraine’s NATO partners, — Ed.) I tell them: “how is this different from Bucharest, if then you you didn’t give the MAP, and now you haven’t given the invitation”. The answer that I heard from all the representatives of influential countries who did not agree with each other was the following: “We are different now. And you are different now. And then it was a formality, but now this is the beginning of a big work that will lead you to the Alliance”. This is certainly not a firm legal or binding promise, but it is precisely the change in psychology that opens the way to membership, — he said.

Ukraine’s path to NATO

As a reminder, the next NATO summit will take place in Washington, DC, from July 9 to 11, 2024.

Discussions about Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance continue to this day. Among them are proposals for so-called hybrid membership, which provides for the accession to NATO of those territories of Ukraine where there is no Russian occupation. One of these proposals was made by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who is now working together with the Office of the President of Ukraine to implement Ukrainian sanctions policy.
