The Austrian Ministry for EU Affairs and Constitutional Affairs Caroline Edtstadler believes that Ukraine's accession to the EU is impossible “in the next 5 – 10 years”.

Austria once again opposed the early accession of Ukraine to the EU

Caroline Edtstadler noted that the full process of Ukraine's accession will be lengthy. In her opinion, there can be no accelerated procedure for Ukraine.

Ukraine's accession will be a long process of adaptation, which certainly cannot be achieved in the next 5-10 years, as “some states in the Western Balkans have been waiting decades for the next step,” the minister noted .

A “creative approach” to introduce EU values to Ukraine

By the way, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg recently suggested that Ukraine consider other ways of integrating into the EU, besides membership.

The minister also wanted to say that you obviously have to be creative in how you introduce Western values to Ukraine, Edtstadler said.

But she added that , despite the fact that Ukraine heard the refusal of EU membership, this is not what was meant, and this is not the position of Austria.

Austria's position on the war in Ukraine

  • Austria refused to supply Ukraine with weapons, but supports the country with humanitarian aid. The country supplied 10,000 helmets, bulletproof vests and 100,000 liters of fuel.
  • Austria also provided assistance to the Red Cross and other non-governmental organizations in the amount of 17.5 million euros.
  • The government of the country contributes 10 million euros to the World Bank assistance program for Ukraine.

Recall that on February 28, Ukraine applied for EU membership. The application was soon successfully accepted and approved. However, this does not guarantee us an early entry into the European community of states.
