Late in the evening of October 1, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel, launching hundreds of missiles. This shelling was twice as large-scale as the April one.

This was reported by Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder. As Sky News reports, US destroyers launched about 12 interceptors at Iranian missiles.

Pentagon comments on attack on Israel

According to Ryder, Iran's attack on Israel on October 1 was twice as large as the April attack. He also noted that the main goal of this strike was massive destruction.

You can't launch that many missiles at a target without the intention of hitting something. So, just like last time, their intention is to cause destruction, the Pentagon spokesman is convinced.

Reference. The Jerusalem Post wrote that Iran launched about 500 ballistic missiles during the October 1 attack. At the same time, the IDF said that it detected 180 air targets in the sky. During the last attack, on April 13, 2024, Iran launched 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles, and 120 ballistic missiles at Israel.

Ryder added that US destroyers helped repel the attack. Thus, about a dozen interceptors were launched at Iranian missiles launched towards Israel. According to media reports, there are currently three US destroyers with guided missiles in part of the Mediterranean Sea: USS Arleigh Burke, USS Cole, and USS Bulkeley. The Pentagon noted that the Iranian attack on October 1 was repelled by only two ships.

In addition, it became known that on Tuesday, October 1, Pentagon Secretary Lloyd Austin held talks with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant for the second time. During this conversation, as Ryder reports, Austin confirmed the unwavering support of the United States. The Pentagon chief also noted that “the United States takes a strong position throughout the Middle East to protect American forces and Israel from threats from Iran and terrorist organizations supported by Iran.”
