Trumpists don’t want to negotiate help for Ukraine: what does the ex-US President need?

The Trumpist part of the US Republican Party is blocking further military aid for Ukraine. And Trump himself has started a cynical political game from which Ukraine may suffer.

About this 24 Channelsaid political scientist Oleg Sahakyan, noting that the Trumpist part of the Republicans continues to block the acceptance of aid for Ukraine. They cover it with the topic of migration. They are not in the mood to agree on anything.

What Trump wants to do

As Sahakyan noted, the main problem is that military assistance has not yet been accepted – Donald Trump. He does not support any agreements with the Democrats so as not to give a political victory to Biden. After all, this could harm Trump in the presidential elections in 2024.

This is an absolutely cynical and selfish electoral approach, where he uses threats to Ukraine, transatlantic unity, US national interests as hostages of their own political game. “Trump has the opportunity to do this because he has a high rating,” Sahakyan said.

But Trump also makes significant mistakes. His recent announcement that the United States will not protect NATO countries that do not pay dues from Russian attack has damaged his position in the Senate. This influenced votes on military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Then as many as 22 Republicans voted for the bill, although it was expected that there would be significantly fewer of them.

This careless step by Trump led to the situation broke down in the Senate. There is now Johnson in the House of Representatives, who, focusing on Trump, does not put the bill to a vote. The political crisis that Trump is creating is a problem that has not gone away,” Sahakyan noted.

Despite this, there is now a certain window of opportunity that the House of Representatives will vote after the recess for this bill. But this is a positive scenario. It is worth preparing for the negative, because discussions and disputes may continue in the future.

Military assistance from the United States: briefly

  • February 13 The US Senate voted for an aid package that should allocate more than $60 billion to Ukraine. It also lists aid for Israel, Taiwan, etc.
  • Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson criticized this bill and refused to put it to a vote. US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who arrived in Ukraine on February 23, stressed that work continues to ensure that military assistance for Ukraine continues.
  • Vladimir Zelensky emphasized that assistance from the USA is critically important for Ukraine. If it does not exist, the state will look for other ways. But the price may be too high.
