Trump vs. Harris: Why the US is choosing between the two in the elections and are there any other candidates Dmitry Usik

On November 5, the US will hold elections for the post of president of the country. The main competitors being considered for the position are Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

However, although it is customary to remember only the candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties, in fact there are many more. Why the main fight is unfolding between Harris and Trump, 24 Channel explains.

Harris, Trump, or maybe someone else?

Yes, in the 2024 elections, in addition to Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, there are 16 more candidates, and there were even more. The most famous of those who withdrew was President John F. Kennedy's nephew, Robert Kennedy Jr., who is now campaigning for Trump, although his name remains on the ballot in some states.

In fact, anyone who meets the following criteria can run for office:

  • the candidate must be born in America;
  • he must be at least 35 years old;
  • he must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years.

However, the chances of candidates who are not Democrats or Republicans (that is, “independents” candidates) are negligible. In the US, third parties are traditionally ignored, and the 2024 elections will be no exception.

But some can act as spoilers, that is, take votes away from the favorite in a particular state where they have local popularity. This can be a decisive factor in the so-called “swing states”.
