“Given the likelihood of negotiations with Iran in the near future, I will make a decision whether to strike or not within the next two weeks,” Levitt reported Trump as saying.
Trump doubts action against Iran
She did not specify how the president assessed the prospects for diplomatic negotiations, but stressed that the US goal remains unchanged – to stop Iran from enriching uranium and preventing the creation of nuclear weapons.
Trump has for days mused about the possibility of the US joining Israeli strikes on Iran, but his announcement marks a temporary de-escalation. He left the G7 summit in Canada early and issued tough statements, including calls for the evacuation of Tehran residents.
According to sources familiar with the situation, US officials are already preparing for a possible strike on Iran, with a strike being considered as early as this weekend.
Trump is known for frequently setting two-week deadlines for decisions, sometimes sticking to them and sometimes not acting at all.
