Trump invited Canada to become the 51st US state: media reveal details of conversation with Trudeau Dmitry Usik

Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Donald Trump in Florida. During their conversation, Trump suggested that perhaps Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

The Republican responded to arguments that high tariffs could kill the economy of the US's northern neighbor, reports 24 Channel citing Fox News.

In what context was Trump's proposal on Canada made

So, after Trump's threats to introduce sharp tariffs on Canadian products, Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago without warning. The Republican cited Canada's inability to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States as the reason for such a desire.

Now new details of the politicians' conversation have emerged. According to two people at the table who heard the conversation, Trump, despite being cordial and friendly, was very direct when it came to what he wanted from his Canadian counterpart. The new US President told Trudeau that Canada had “failed the border.”

Donald Trump said that if Canada couldn't solve its border and trade deficit, he would impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on the first day he returned to office.

Trudeau responded by saying that such a tariff would completely kill Canada's economy. To which Trump asked, “So your country can't survive unless it fleeces the United States of $100 billion?”

Trump then suggested that Canada become the 51st state, prompting nervous laughter from Prime Minister Trudeau and others. The Republican went on to say that Prime Minister was a better title, although Trudeau could still be the governor of the new state.

Someone at the table chimed in and told Trump that Canada would be a very liberal state, prompting even more laughter. Trump suggested that Canada could become two states, one conservative and one liberal.
