Re-elected US President Donald Trump commented on the situation in Syria, where dictator Bashar al-Assad was overthrown last month. He praised Erdogan for “taking over” Syria at a time when Russia and Iran are weakened.

What Trump thinks about the overthrow of the Assad regime

Donald Trump praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for “taking over” Syria. He called him “smart.”

While Trump stopped short of directly answering the question of whether U.S. troops would remain in Syria, he did point to Turkey's actions. He noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is being strategic given Ankara's “2,000-year-old” historical interest in Syria.

Trump called Erdogan a “smart guy” for acting prudently in sending his forces into Syria while avoiding conflict with Kurdish groups.

Russia is weak, Iran is weak, and he's a very smart guy. They came in and took over, and that's how it is, Trump said.

Recall that Trump expressed hope for mutual understanding with Xi Jinping. He even invited Xi to his inauguration in Washington, but experts doubt that the Chinese leader will come.
