Trump and Zelensky's best conversation, massive attack on Kyiv and the front: review of the main events of the week

by alex

This week, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Vladimir Putin, but was left dissatisfied because he found the Kremlin dictator uninterested in peace. Almost immediately after that conversation, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine, causing significant destruction. That same day, Donald Trump spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky and said the US would consider sending Patriot missiles to Ukraine.

A reconnaissance drone was hovering over Kiev the day before the attack. And according to intelligence estimates, the time is approaching when there will be 1,000 drones per day or more.

In addition, the situation at the front remains difficult, the enemy continues its slaughter tactics and terrorizes civilians.

Trump's conversation with Putin and Zelensky

On July 4, US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin held a conversation that lasted almost an hour. Putin allegedly agreed that they needed to seek negotiated solutions, but stressed that he “would not give up on eliminating all the root causes of the confrontation.” Trump said he was not satisfied with the conversation with Putin because there was no progress on the issue of the war in Ukraine.

In a commentary to Factm ICTV, political scientist, candidate of political sciences, associate professor at the Taras Shevchenko University Igor Reiterovich noted that the tone of the last conversation was such that Trump had no doubts that Putin was not going to stop the war.

“Trump is disappointed that Putin's rhetoric has changed. If earlier the dictator demonstrated at least some minimal desire. Now there is no desire at all,” says the political scientist.

In order to force Putin to compromise, you need to put pressure on him.

Donald Trump wants Europe to be the United States' largest trading partner, so that Europeans buy more from the Americans, including weapons.

And Trump's calculation is that some of these weapons will be supplied to Ukraine, but the European Union will buy them. By the way, NATO's final communiqué notes that Ukraine is an integral part of European security, says Igor Reiterovich.

Trump can put pressure on Russia with tough real sanctions, but for now the American president is not too keen on getting involved in this story.

According to the political scientist, it is the saturation of Ukraine with weapons and sanctions against the Russian Federation that are the most effective measures against Putin. But Europe and the US need to do this in a complex manner.

Igor Reiterovich also notes that the electorate could force Trump to be more decisive in relation to Russia, since midterm elections to the US House of Representatives will take place next year.

Today, polls show that the United States' position on Russia under Trump is wrong, meaning America needs to act tougher.

“Such an opinion exists, but we will find out later how much it will influence the preparation for these elections. But I do not rule out that if the Republicans lose to the Democrats in key districts, then Trump may change his position on Putin and Russia,” Igor Reiterovich believes.

An important point for Ukraine is that Trump, in a conversation with Zelensky, promised to check what American weapons were supposed to be sent to Kyiv, but were suspended.

According to the political scientist, the change of decision was probably influenced by the conversation with Putin, the massive attack on Ukraine on July 4, and after that, calls from European partners. The American president at least spoke with German Chancellor Merz.

— Probably, the Europeans were shocked by this attack. And Trump simply realized that he looks very bad in this story (with the weapons stoppage). And he wants everyone to love him. That is why he said that they will check and look for opportunities. Although this may take time, and we actually have very little time, — the political scientist notes.

It is worth noting that after the combined strike on July 4, the US President said in a conversation with Zelensky that he would continue to help Ukraine and consider the issue of supplying Patriot missiles. By the way, the Ukrainian President called his conversation with Trump the best.

— As for drones. We have agreed with the American side to significantly increase joint work. This week, an agreement was signed between our Ukrainian defense ministries and one of the leading American companies. This will give Ukraine hundreds of thousands more drones this year.

“This was probably the best conversation of all this time, the most productive. We discussed the topic of air defense, and I am grateful for the willingness to help. It is the Patriots who are the key to protection from ballistics,” Zelensky said in a video address on Saturday.

It should be noted that a reconnaissance drone was circling over Kiev the day before the strike, which indicates that the air defense system is not working properly.

On July 4, Russia carried out a massive shelling of Ukraine. Populated areas in seven regions were damaged.

Destruction was recorded at more than 20 locations in six districts of Kyiv. The Polish consulate was also hit. As a result of the attack on July 4, two people were killed in Kyiv, more than 30 were injured, including a 10-year-old child. Civilian infrastructure was damaged in three districts of the Kyiv region. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, an enemy UAV struck Kryvyi Rih – at least six were injured there.

In Sumy Oblast, the enemy hit a bioethanol plant and damaged tanks with explosions. In Odessa, the Chinese consulate building was slightly damaged by a Russian attack.

It is worth noting that almost immediately after the media began reporting on Trump's call with Putin, Russia launched 550 air targets at Ukraine. Of those, at least 330 were Shaheed drones, according to the Air Force. Ballistic and cruise missiles were also launched.

According to political scientist Igor Reiterovich, such a coincidence may indicate that Putin had a deliberate plan to attack immediately after his conversation with Trump. In addition, July 4 is a national holiday in the United States – Independence Day.

– That's why there was 100% symbolism here, which Putin is so fixated on. In this way, he is sending certain signals to the US and Europe, – the political expert believes.

Trump sincerely does not understand why Putin is attacking civilian infrastructure. For him, as a businessman, this is illogical. And Putin believes that he will press and show the whole world what a freak he is, that it is better to negotiate with him on his terms.

“That is, Putin wants to show once again that don’t give Ukraine weapons, because I will hit residential buildings,” says Igor Reiterovich.

The situation at the front for the week

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky spent two days in the Kharkiv region, where there is a threat of new attacks by the occupiers. According to the commander-in-chief, last week our soldiers repelled more than 60 enemy assaults in this area. Every day there are about a dozen battles here. The Russians are trying to overwhelm with numbers.

On July 2, the General Staff reported that several days ago one of the enemy's sabotage and reconnaissance groups entered the village of Dachnoye, in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The occupiers managed to take a photo with the Russian tricolor, but that was all they managed to do – our soldiers destroyed them. Dachnoye remains under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

There were several more attempts to storm the building, and then two Russians were luckier – they were taken prisoner by the Ukrainian Navy marines.

The General Staff emphasized that the Russian propaganda statements about the capture of a bridgehead in the Dnepropetrovsk region do not correspond to reality.

According to Deep State analysts, the Russians have occupied the settlements of Zeleny Ugol and Novoukrainka near the administrative border of the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions. These settlements are located near Dachnoye, and the situation there, in turn, is dynamic and tense.

On July 3, Russian forces attacked in the direction of Tyotkino in the Kursk region , according to analysts at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). On July 4, a Russian military blogger claimed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces had launched a counteroffensive near Bezsalovka (east of Tyotkino along the international border in northern Sumy Oblast).

Geolocation footage from July 3 shows that the Ukrainian Armed Forces advanced east of Kolesnikovka (southeast of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region ), while the Russians claim to have captured the town of Stroyevka (northwest of Kamenka along the international border).

On July 3 and 4, Russian troops attacked north of Kupyansk near Petrovpavlovka, Kindrashovka, Golubovka and Radovka, as well as along the international border in the direction of Ambarnoye and near Milovoye.

On July 3 and 4, Russian forces attacked south of Chasovy Yar in the direction of Belaya Gora. According to ISW, Russian forces are massing in this direction and using motorized transport to transport supplies and personnel, as well as to conduct evacuations.

The most difficult areas on the front remain Kursk, Pokrovsk, and Limansk.

The situation in Sumy region

As Vadim Mysnik, the speaker of the Siversk Regional Department of Public Administration, noted in a comment to Factm ICTV, over the past week the situation in the area of responsibility, which is Chernihiv, part of Sumy and part of Kharkiv regions, has not undergone any fundamental changes.

The enemy is located along the border, but there is no evidence of the formation of assault groups.

— The Russians continue the tactics of shelling the border area. But it is in the Severo-Slobozhansky direction that the invaders have suffered significant losses in the recent period, and therefore are forced to reduce combat activity, — emphasized Vadim Mysnik.

The occupiers are also forced to regroup and bring in reserves from other parts of the border. The defense forces do not give the enemy any peace – they are actively delivering high-precision strikes deep into the enemy's Russian territory, destroying command posts, storage areas for equipment, ammunition, etc.

Vadim Mysnik notes that a characteristic feature of recent days is massive air strikes on the civilian sector using kamikaze drones. The enemy usually launches them from the territory of the Bryansk and Kursk regions.

Thus, over the past 24 hours, the Defense Forces in the area of responsibility of the Siversk OTU shot down 99 attack UAVs.

Vadim Mysnik also said that Russians continue to resort to provocative actions for propaganda purposes.

— There was a fact on July 4. The occupiers installed their tricolor, their rag in the area of the Gremyach checkpoint, which is in the Chernihiv region. The defense forces found and immediately destroyed this flag, — noted the speaker of the OTU Siversk.

Thus, the situation on the border is completely under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

On July 1, the General Staff provided statistics that in June, the enemy’s total losses in the North Slobozhansky and Kursk directions amounted to about 9,310 servicemen, of which more than 4,470 were irretrievable, about 4,800 were medical, and 42 were captured.

Also, over the course of the month, 423 units of Russian military equipment were destroyed, including 6 tanks, 20 combat armored vehicles, 89 artillery systems and MLRS, and three air defense systems.

Attack on TCC in Poltava

On July 3, Russians attacked the TCC building in Poltava. Unfortunately, two people died, another 47 were injured, including two police officers.

Prisoner exchange on July 4

Another prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia took place on Friday. Military personnel and civilians returned home, some of whom had been in captivity since 2022.

The liberated defenders defended the Donetsk and Mariupol regions, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the youngest liberated defender is only 20 years old, and the oldest is 59 years old. In addition to soldiers and sergeants, officers were also liberated from captivity.

All those released from captivity will receive the necessary medical care, physical and psychological rehabilitation, as well as all due payments for the entire period of their stay in captivity.

Ukrainian strikes on targets in Russia

On June 30, and then again on July 3, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the command post of the 8th combined arms army of the Russian Armed Forces in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast. The General Staff notes that this attack will significantly complicate the enemy's planning and conducting operations in the directions of Pokrovsk and Toretsk.

The Defense Forces also struck the command post of the 20th Motorized Rifle Division in the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast.

On July 1, explosions were heard in Izhevsk, Udmurtia. Sources in the SBU say that kamikaze drones attacked the Kupol electromechanical plant. At this plant, the Russians produce the Tor and Osa air defense missile systems, as well as the Harpia-A1 attack UAVs. The head of the Udmurt Republic, Alexander Brechalov, confirmed that one of the enterprises in Izhevsk was hit. A fire broke out there.

July 1 was loud in the Saratov region. Ukrainian drones flew over the territory of the oil refinery of JSC Saratovorgsintez. The refinery supplied the occupation forces with fuel and lubricants. After hitting the territory of the refinery, a large-scale fire broke out.

Since the evening of July 2, explosions have been heard at ammunition depots of the Russian occupiers in the area of Velikoye Orekhovoye near Khartsyzsk. The Russians use this settlement as a rear base – the enemy has placed command posts, logistics centers and ammunition depots there.

On July 3, the Energia plant in the city of Yelets in the Lipetsk region was attacked. This enterprise produces batteries for missile planning and correction units; for the Iskander complex, as well as cruise missiles. PAO Energia is the largest enterprise in Russia specializing in the production of chemical power sources.

On July 4, in the city of Sergiev Posad in the Moscow region, Ukrainian drones attacked the JSC Federal Scientific and Practical Center Research Institute of Applied Chemistry. According to the General Staff, the Russians produce thermobaric warheads for Shaheds there.

On July 5, the Unmanned Systems Force, along with other components of the Defense Forces, attacked the VNIIR-Progress Research Institute in Cheboksary, in the Chuvash Republic.

The target was the workshop where the Russians produce the Kometa adaptive antenna arrays, which are used in the Shaheds, Iskander-K missiles, unified planning and correction modules for guided aerial bombs and other high-precision weapons.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that our weapons reached the target area; the results are being clarified.

Also on July 5, the Defense Forces struck the Borisoglebsk airfield in the Voronezh region. The airfield is home to Su-34, Su-35S, and Su-30SM aircraft.

A warehouse containing guided aerial bombs, a training aircraft and probably other aircraft were hit.
