Effects of the elements in Puerto Rico

Tropical hurricane Fiona covered the southwestern coast of the island, moving into the Dominican Republic. Forecasters forecast rainfall from the storm to be between 340 and 460 millimeters, with a maximum of 760 millimeters.

These rains will lead to life-threatening and catastrophic outbreaks and urban flooding in Puerto Rico and the eastern Dominican Republic, as well as landslides in highland areas. – reported in the Hurricane Control Center.

As a result of the ferocity of the elements, the light disappeared throughout the island. US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in Puerto Rico.

Some rivers have broken the record for the highest level of water rise since Hurricane Maria hit the island in 2017. Then the elements also de-energized Puerto Rico. Many were then left without electricity for several months.

Forecasters predict that Tropical Hurricane Fiona will only gain momentum and become a major hurricane. Because of the elements, the government of the Bahamas has already issued warnings to citizens – the country is also under the threat of a hurricane.

On the Saffir-Simpson scale, a tropical hurricane was classified as the first, that is, the lowest category. However, the forecasts are disappointing – it may increase to at least category 3.

The previous day, the hurricane had already claimed one life in Guadeloupe – a man died when the flood caused by the hurricane demolished his house. The capital of the French overseas department of Basse-Terre was completely destroyed there.

Bad weather rages in Ukraine

On September 18, bad weather in the form of showers and heavy wind swept across Ukraine:

  • In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, due to heavy rains, partial flooding was recorded. In the regional center, rescuers had to pump out water in separate areas.
  • In the Sumy region, a powerful wind tore off roofs and destroyed houses. 8 people were injured, 1 died.
  • Bad weather also raged in the Khmelnitsky region, in Ternopil, Cherkasy and Odessa.

For September 19, weather forecasts are disappointing – in almost all regions Ukraine, except for the South, declared a storm warning and a yellow level of danger.
