Transnistria suspends industry due to Russian gas shortage

In Moldova's pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria, the so-called authorities are complaining that Ukraine's decision to stop transit of Russian gas through the country has stopped local industry.

This was stated by the so-called first deputy head of the region's government, Sergei Obolonik.

Obolonik called the termination of Russian gas transit through the territory of Ukraine a “crisis”, which is of a “severe nature”.

According to him, due to a gas shortage in the unrecognized Transnistria, almost 75 thousand households were disconnected from gas supply, and another 116 thousand receive it in smaller volumes.

Recall that on January 1, 2025, mass gas outages began in the unrecognized Transnistria.

Gas transportation company Tiraspoltransgaz warned of the cessation of gas supplies to boiler houses, private sectors and apartment buildings with autonomous heating. Hot water supplies were also stopped.

Radio Liberty's Moldovan Service reported that residents of the region would be able to use natural gas only for cooking until it ran out in the pipes.

The Chisinau government announced that Russian Gazprom had refused an offer to supply gas to the region via a roundabout route. The authorities also Transnistria rejected the proposal of the legitimate government of Moldova to supply gas purchased on the European market.
