The United States plans to produce critical weapons for Ukraine in countries that are allies. In particular, the first foreign plant for the production of guided long-range missiles GMLRS for the HIMARS MLRS will be opened in Australia.

The publication notes that the plant is planned to open on Australian military base on the outskirts of Sydney, its name is “Building 215”.

The first foreign US plant will open in Australia

This need is explained by the fact that the use of munitions in Ukraine and the Middle East – from rockets to artillery shells – has undermined the ability of the American industrial base to meet demand in full. There are now some difficulties in quickly replenishing depleted stocks.

“The administration of US President Joe Biden is trying to create several production lines in allied countries for critical types of weapons, “although this is not easy,” the article says.

In addition, in Europe, manufacturers reported that they they need long-term orders from governments that would give them confidence in expanding capacity.

How production will be established in Australia

Under the plan, Lockheed, which currently produces the GMLRS at only one plant in Camden, Arkansas, USA, will hire 6 Australian engineers and send them to the plant to become familiar with the production process. Lockheed will then ship semi-assembled missile parts from the US to Australia, where they will undergo final assembly on a new production line in Building 215.

Ukraine needs ammunition

  • Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov addressed his EU colleagues, noting that Russian troops exceed the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the amount of ammunition in ratio of three to one, and the weapons shortage in Ukraine is getting worse every day.
  • Ukraine needs 200 thousand 155-mm shells per month. At the same time, the Russian army can receive almost twice as much ammunition, and about a million shells arrived from North Korea to Russia.
