Channel 24 operator Yuri Oliynyk died in the battles in the Lugansk region, defending Ukraine from the Russians. He was not afraid of the invaders both in 2014 and during the full-scale war.

Yuri Oliynyk came to work as a cameraman on Channel 24 in 2017. Colleagues and just good friends shared vivid memories and talked about that turning point, February 24, when he went to the front.

“I'm leaving in the evening”

“At 5 in the morning they started bombing, at 9 o'clock we were all at work. Yuriy came to work in the morning, set up the camera and pulled out the keys,” recalled fellow journalist Marichka Kryzhanovskaya.

He gave the keys to the room with cameras to the chief cameraman Yuri Gerasimov, saying “Yes, you will be responsible.”

We say: “Yurka, where are you going, what happened?” He said: “I'm leaving in the evening,” said Marichka Kryzhanovskaya.

Yuri was one of those people who were the first to go to the draft board when the war began. Colleagues remembered that he never talked about the war, about the ATO, but talked about the mountains, his campaigns – about what he lived.

The mountains were his resting place

Mountains were the place of his peace and inspiration. He also took his wounded brothers there in a special wheelchair – “juliet”.

Yuri loved to talk about mountains

“When Yura and I went to the mountains for the first time, my wife was terribly angry, because it was our wedding anniversary. I traded the wedding anniversary for a hike with Yura in the mountains. Emotions with which we climbed to the top, memories – until life itself” , – director Kostya Gabriychuk remembered.

Yuri Oliynyk was also a talented photographer

Yuri Oliynyk said about the mountains: “I came, I saw, I felt – it does not fit in the photo and video”.

Yury's friend Zarina Akopyats, a former press secretary of the veterans' organization, spoke about their patriotic tradition of always going to Ukrainian films.

“Even if it was a very bad film, they never regretted that they went to see it, because this is money to support Ukrainian cinema,” said Zarina Hakopets.

I put down my video camera and picked up a weapon

Yuri Oliynyk was a professional at work, everything should be as he planned.

Co-author of the project ” Recruit” Aleksey Chubashev said that Yuri Oliynyk was a hero for him personally, because when he joined the team, one could immediately see a professional, a journalist, a military man and just a worthy man.

He put down his video camera and picked up a weapon. Just go and take a weapon, not be afraid of the enemy – this is really a heroic deed, – said Anton Mironovich, speaker of the Academy of the Ground Forces.

Yuri filmed local news and documentary projects, including “Recruit”, WE 2: 0, “Giving Life”. For the past four years, he has been filming military projects to popularize the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
