A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet, near the border with Nepal, on Tuesday morning, January 7. At least 95 people were killed and 130 injured in the disaster.

More than 1,000 buildings were damaged. This was reported by 24 Channel with reference to the Chinese agency Xinhua.

Rescue operation continues

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred in the village of Tsogo, Dingzhi County, in the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region of Southwest China.

There are 27 villages with a population of up to 7 thousand people within a radius of 20 km from the epicenter. The population of the entire Dingzhi County is more than 61 thousand people, according to official data.

More than 3,400 rescuers and 340 medical workers have been sent to the disaster-stricken area, a press conference reported.

According to the weather forecast, the next three days in Dingzhi will be mostly sunny, and the minimum temperature will fluctuate between -18 and -14 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, Channel 24 published footage of a powerful earthquake in Tibet. And Chinese leader Xi Jinping called on officials to make every effort to search for and rescue victims.
