Threatening NATO: What dangerous sabotage operations does Russia carry out in the Baltic Sea Dzvenislava Moshovskaya

Due to damage to the Estlink 2 underwater energy cable in the Baltic Sea, NATO plans to strengthen its presence there. There is an assumption that Russia may be involved in this incident.

Captain 1st rank of the Ukrainian Navy reserve Andrey Ryzhenko told 24 Kanal that concerns about Russian sabotage have existed for many years. There were studies that systematized Russia's activity in hunting for cables and other critical infrastructure objects of NATO countries.

Threats from Russia

Andrey Ryzhenko noted that the Russians have all the necessary means, including submarines that can dive to very great depths to carry out sabotage.

Important! Estonia has begun patrolling the Estlink 1 underwater energy cable. The operation is being carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Navy and Border Guard to protect critical infrastructure after another cable, Estlink 2, was damaged. The Estonian Defense Minister noted the country's readiness to protect its energy links and respond to any threats.

The Estlink 2 cable, according to the captain, is very important, because it connected Finland and Estonia, transmitting 650 megawatts of electricity.

The Russians probably used a rather primitive tactic, damaging the underwater cable with an anchor from their shadow tanker. This is a very dangerous practice, – said Ryzhenko.

He recalled that this is not the first time that cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea. They are talking about the torn Lithuanian Internet cable that was transmitting information. Russia's involvement has also become one of the versions of the incident.

According to Andrey Ryzhenko, the authorities of NATO countries have the legal right to prevent Russian ships from crossing the borders of the Baltic Sea if they engage in suspicious activity.

There is no need to allow a potential threat in this area, because Russia has the ability to carry out sabotage operations, he emphasized.
