“I am very pleased that Rebecca Welch has been appointed to the position of chief referee of the Premier League for the first time. The Premier League press service reported that three days later, on December 26, the Sheffield United — Luton will be officiated by a panel of referees led by Sam Ellison. During her career she has also officiated matches in the Women's Super League and the 2017 and 2020 Women's FA Cup Finals at Wembley Stadium.
Welch became the first woman to referee a Championship and FA Cup match, and last month she became the first female referee to serve as fourth official in an English Premier League match, joining the match's officiating panel Fulham — Manchester United.
