Maxim Yali on the prospects for obtaining a candidate for EU membership/Collage of Channel 24

Already on June 23-24, at the EU summit, the leaders of the member countries will vote for granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. He is 75% sure that this decision will be supported.

Political scientist Maksim Yali told Channel 24 about this. He stressed that France, Germany and Italy – the leaders of the European Union – the day before, on June 16, also supported this decision. Most of the countries have previously expressed their “yes”.

What are the chances that all 27 EU countries will vote positively? Maxim Yali believes that the probability that all EU countries will vote for granting Ukraine a candidate for EU membership – 75%.

I believe that this decision will be made, because it will be a kind of signal of support. There are no obligations and this will also be positively perceived by the European society,” the political scientist said. >

By the way, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine is recommended to grant the status of a candidate member of the European Union. This, of course, provided that a number of important reforms are carried out in the country.

Thus, Ukraine has already implemented more than half of the rules, norms and standards of Europe, including 70%. But our state still has a lot of work to do – achieving the rule of law, fighting oligarchs and corruption.

Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak spoke about the recommendation to grant Ukraine a candidate for EU membership. He told in more detail what tasks our state needs to complete in order to take the next steps. Specifically:

  • Adopt and implement legislation on the procedure for selecting judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
  • Complete the verification of the integrity of candidates for members of the High Council of Justice. The same applies to the selection of candidates for the High Qualifications Commission of Judges of Ukraine.
  • Strengthen the fight against corruption. It is also necessary to complete the selection and appoint a new head of NABU and a SAPO prosecutor;
  • Comply with anti-money laundering legislation. These are the standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF);
  • Adopt a comprehensive strategic plan to reform the law enforcement sector;
  • In Ukraine, earn an “anti-oligarchic” law;
  • Complete the reform of the legal framework relating to national minorities. It is currently being worked on according to the recommendations provided by the Venice Commission.
