Member of the European Parliament Andrius Kubilius believes that Ukraine can join the EU in 2029. This is an optimistic scenario, for which negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union should begin this year.
Rasa Yuknevicienė, a member of the European Parliament, former Minister of Defense of Lithuania, spoke about this on the air of Channel 24 . According to her, reforms should also be carried out in the European Union itself.
“Decisions are now made unanimously on foreign policy. For example, one state is against – there are no sanctions. Therefore, many states and politicians still need to be persuaded so that there are changes in the EU process,” the deputy stressed.
Negotiations should start this year
Yuknevicienė noted that Ukraine's accession to the European Union in 2029 is an optimistic scenario that her European People's Party is striving for. Now the main task is to start negotiations on membership in 2023.
There is no political solution for states to get together and tell a country that it is a member of the EU. We do not want this process to be too long, as with the states of the Western Balkans. When stagnation came to this region, they have been working on it for a long time, but not everything is working out so well, she said.
The MEP stressed that she did not want the bureaucratic processes for Ukraine's membership in the EU to last for a very long time. According to the former Lithuanian defense minister, the main thing is to start negotiations this year, but it will not be easy.
“In order to start negotiations this year, we need to work hard on both sides: from the Ukrainian and the European ones,” Rasa Yuknevicienė added.
