For several weeks now, the Russian military has been shelling the Zaporozhye NPP on a regular basis. And on August 25, something happened that had never happened in the entire history of the station – it disconnected from the network.
The reason for this was the fires that broke out as a result of shelling by the occupiers of the ZNPP. One of her employees explained the danger of a complete blackout of the station.
One of the four power supply lines was working
As an employee of the Zaporizhzhya NPP noted, on August 25 the station was completely disconnected from the power supply. He noted that this happened for the first time in 35 years of its operation. The station employee added that the Zaporizhzhya NPP has four voltage distribution lines. But lately only one has worked. And it was he who was lost the day before.
Therefore, at 12:10, the emergency protection of the reactor plant at the fifth unit went off, and the sixth unit switched to its own needs. When emergency protection works at the reactor plant, it completely extinguishes the reactor,” he stressed.
The specialist also explained what it means to disconnect the unit from the network. This, he noted, is a situation in which the unit maintains a certain level of power. And if certain manipulations are carried out, it can be quickly connected to the network.
He added that already at 12 :30 not only managed to partially restore power lines. ZNPP also began to download the sixth block, as well as transport energy to the grid.
But at 14.16 the line was damaged again. As a result, the protection against accidents at the sixth block worked. And it was at that moment that the station was completely de-energized. This has never happened, the employee of the ZNPP noted.
The diesel will last for a week
Since the emergency power went off both at the fifth and sixth units, for a certain time they will be powered by diesel generators safety systems. At the same time, you should not completely rely on them.
But diesel generators are limited by fuel supply. Diesel should last about a week. Then the fuel will begin to heat up in the reactor. This is the worst option,” he stressed.
If there is no connection with the energy system of Ukraine at the time of the end of the diesel engine, then soon there will be nothing to cool the active zones. In addition, there will be no opportunity to maintain the required temperature in the cooling pools. We recall that they store spent nuclear fuel.
In this case, everything will begin to heat up very quickly. And after that, the process of core melting will begin, which will have all the negative consequences. We are talking about emissions, as well as nuclear explosions.
What is the radiation background now
In the Zaporizhzhya Regional District, information was reported about the radiation background. It is known that at 08:00 on August 26, the background radiation in the region remains unchanged. Therefore, there is no threat to life, as well as to the health of the population. They also noted that now the fixing data does not exceed those typical for the territories near the ZNPP.
