Piontkovsky about Lukashenko/Collage of Channel 24
Putin continues to try to put pressure on Lukashenka to involve him in the war against Ukraine. In particular, Russia once again staged provocations for Belarus. However, Lukashenka continues to rely on and, probably, will be able to avoid his participation in the war.
Russian publicist Andrei Piontkovsky told Channel 24 about this. He says that Vladimir Putin and even Boris Yeltsin tried for 30 years to drag Alexander Lukashenko, if not into the war, then into Russia.
But, as the expert stressed, the Belarusian self-proclaimed president desperately resisted, deceived them for 30 years and did not want to become the “Secretary of the Minsk Glavkom”.
He has a lot of practice and experience in cheating. My conclusion is that Lukashenka is spinning, he is a Belarusian rat and will be able to spin, because sending an army to Ukraine is mortally dangerous, Piontkovsky believes.
According to him, Putin insisted when it was more urgent, and his troops were near Kyiv.
“I don't know what Lukashenka can do now, when the entire Russian army is closed in hard battles in the Donbass. Therefore, he is winding,” the publicist replied.
How will Lukashenka get out of this situation? According to Piontkovsky, Lukashenka looks at the general political context:
- he sees Tokaev talking to Putin (we are talking about the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev),
- he sees Lithuania boldly escalating the conflict,
- he sees what the Pentagon said after the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement regarding Lithuania.
It becomes more and more clear that Putin's show-offs are no longer taken seriously, this is a losing country. And Lukashenka sees this too. Why would he associate himself with the losing side at the last moment? the expert asks.
Piontkovsky on pressure on Lukashenka from Russia:
The threat of offensive from Belarus: in short
- Earlier, the General Staff reported that Russian officers were training the Belarusian military during the exercises. The main directions are reconnaissance and sabotage. According to media reports, the Belarusian military is actively digging trenches not only near the borders with Ukraine, but also near the borders with Poland and Lithuania.
- Ukrainian intelligence notes that Belarusian troops can attack Ukraine only as part of Russian-Belarusian group. There are no better strike forces, but Russia can return its troops back to Belarus.
- Intelligence says that large-scale missile attacks on Ukrainian territory on June 25 are precisely an attempt to draw Belarus into a war against Ukraine.
- Besides, according to Belarusian telegram channels, the Russians have started to take ammunition out of Belarus.
