They will look for a compromise, – a political scientist about a complete ban on Russians from entering Europe

Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called on European partners to deprive Russians of visas to the EU. A number of countries are already considering certain restrictions and complications.

However, one cannot hope for a complete ban on entry into Europe for citizens of the aggressor state. Political scientist, vice-rector of the UCU Dmitry Sherengovsky told Channel 24 about this.

The discussion continues

Today we see that the number of countries supporting the complication of the procedure for obtaining visas by Russians is growing. At the same time, there are those who persist. In particular, this applies to tourism-dependent countries. Yes, Cyprus, Greece, Portugal do not agree with the visa ban for Russian tourists.

There is no clear signal that there will be a complete ban. Most likely, they will look for a compromise, he stressed.

What complications are we talking about

European countries are considering the possibility of complicating the procedure for issuing visas to Russian citizens. what will happen:

  • payment increase from 35 to 80 euros;
  • lengthening the processing regime;
  • reducing the period of stay;
  • the like.

However, it should be understood that we are only talking about tourist visas . As for study visas, work visas, family reunification visas, visas for refugees who do not agree with the Putin regime – all this, the political scientist said, goes beyond.

“In this there will be no resounding victory on the issue from the point of view of Ukraine, but certain complications will continue,” Sherengovsky said.

Ukraine needs to speak openly, loudly and decisively about restrictions for Russian citizens so that Europeans soberly assess reality. The world must be unanimous in its position – terrorists have no place in the civilized world . The Vice-Rector of the UCU is convinced that we should continue to put pressure on the issues of an increasingly stricter and stricter visa regime.

Prohibition of issuing visas to Russians: in short

  • The EU is already preparing a plan to abolish the issuance of visas to Russians. We are talking about the suspension of the visa facilitation agreement with Russia, which was signed back in 2007.
  • The day before, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that the most important sanctions are the closure of borders because the Russians are taking away foreign land. According to him, the Russians should “live in their own world until they change their philosophy.”
  • The Netherlands, a country against issuing visas to Russians, voiced its clear position. Indeed, after the cynical attack on Ukraine, Russian tourists are not welcome in Europe.
  • However, France and Germany have a different opinion. They propose imposing visa sanctions “not for all Russians.”
  • Alexander Solontai, director of policy programs at the Institute of Political Education, believes that some Russians should keep their visas. This applies to people who support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and oppose the Putin regime.
