They want to fire Speaker Johnson: why this could harm and help Ukraine

Спикера Джонсона хотят уволить: почему это может навредить поможет Украине

Due to a significant delay in considering a bill to help Ukraine, the United States and Taiwan, Speaker of Congress Mike Johnson may be fired. A member of the Republican Party has already registered a corresponding resolution.

For Ukraine, this could be a solution to the problem of providing assistance. However, political scientist Oleg Sahakyan is on air 24 Channelexplained that Johnson's dismissal could also have the opposite effect.

A new problem or a solution to an old one

The US House of Representatives went on recess again until April 9th. However, before this, Congress managed to register a resolution to dismiss Mike Johnson from the post of Speaker. It must be considered within two days after politicians return from vacation.

Interestingly, this decision was initiated by Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene.

There are two assumptions: this can be either part of the solution or part of the problem. Such pressure will create additional pressure on Johnson to put the bill to support Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel to a vote. At the same time, there may be the opposite option, noted Oleg Sahakyan.

The fact is that the Trumpist part of the Republicans understands that the situation is reaching a critical boiling point – collecting signatures for Johnson’s resignation at the finish line. Today there is no prepared person for whom congressmen can vote. It is precisely because of this that “paralysis” of the work of Congress can develop.

“The removal of the Speaker can temporarily paralyze Congress. We remember that when Johnson himself was appointed, the process was very long and complex. Therefore Johnson's removal may not unfreeze the adoption of the budget for Ukraine, but rather delay it until a new speaker is appointed,” the political scientist explained.< /p>

US aid for Ukraine: what is known

  • Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson recently announced that consideration of assistance to Ukraine will begin in the near future. Congressmen are actively discussing the format of support. In particular, there is now talk about the division of defense and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, the provision of loan assistance and the use of the REPO Act – a bill on the confiscation of Russian assets and the transfer of these funds to our state.
  • Advisor US President for National Security Affairs Jake Sullivan arrived in Kyiv on March 20. During a briefing with Andrey Yermak, he said Joe Biden is “fighting every day” for $60 billion in aid to Ukraine. Sullivan is convinced that a decision can still be made.
  • We would like to add that during a meeting with Sullivan, the head of the Presidential Office Andriy Ermak said that Ukraine and the United States could soon sign an agreement on safety. It, in his words, will be “historic.”
