Evgeniy Maloletka and Mstislav Chernov/Georgy Gongadze Award
Georgy Gongadze's birthday and Press Freedom Day announced the winners of the Georgy Gongadze Prize. They were photographers Mstislav Chernov and Evgeniya Maloletka.
This was reported on May 21 on the page of the award. Chernov and Maloletka were in the besieged Mariupol and showed the world the atrocities committed by the Russians.
All the journalists left Mariupol, but the photographers decided to stay there.
“We made a decision even before the war to come to Mariupol and stay there until the moment when we can be. This is an important decision for our work and Ukraine,” Chernov said.
“If we had left, the Ukrainians would not have seen much. We experienced everything together with the Mariupol residents,” Maloletka added.
