Russian oligarchs, who fell under the sanctions of the West because of the war between Russia and Ukraine, want to pay off the restrictions. They are ready to donate their funds to the restoration of Ukraine.
Canadian minister announced calls from oligarchs
The fact that the Russian oligarchs want to pay off the sanctions was announced by Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland at a meeting of G7 finance ministers. It is reported that at this meeting the idea of ”buying out” Russian oligarchs from the sanctions was expressed.
Canadian Minister Chrystia Freeland said that she was receiving calls from Russian oligarchs who were on the sanctions list of Western countries. According to her, they are very unhappy because of this.
The oligarchs are reportedly critical of Russia's war in Ukraine. At the same time, they seem to be unable to distance themselves from the invasion due to threats of reprisals from the Kremlin.
The suggestion, therefore, is that sanctioned Russian oligarchs donate a significant portion of their fortune to rebuilding Ukraine. In exchange, sanctions are lifted from them.
The German publication Handelsblatt considers it expedient to remove Russian oligarchs from sanctions.
Such an agreement could bring certain benefits for all parties: Kyiv gets billions, the West avoids the expropriation debate, and Russian entrepreneurs get their luxury life back, the report says.
Ukraine wants frozen Russian funds
- Forbes reported that Russian assets worth about $500 billion were frozen in the world. Ukraine wants to receive these funds to restore the infrastructure destroyed as a result of Russian aggression.
- Earlier, the head of the Ukrainian government, Denis Shmihal, estimated the damage from a full-scale Russian invasion at $500 billion. Shmigal reported that the restoration would take about $600 billion.
- The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine's international partners would help our state in its efforts to confiscate about $500 billion of the frozen assets of Russia and its oligarchs. The Office of the President stated that they had two plans on how to recover Russian money.
