The war in the Middle East has raised the issue of Israel creating its own NATO together with the Arab countries. And now the emergence of such a project is quite possible.

This opinion was expressed to Channel 24 by the editor-in-chief of the publication “Details” (Israel), Emil Shleimovich, noting that Israel had points of intersection with many Arab countries during its war with Hamas.

Division in the Arab world

A meeting of the leaders of the League of Arab States and the Council of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was recently held. There is now a serious split in the Arab world regarding what is happening in Israel and what is happening in the Gaza Strip.

Several countries have put forward a fairly tough anti-Israel resolution demanding the imposition of sanctions against Israel. In particular, Libya tried to add to the resolution a clause stating that the Palestinian people have the right to armed and any other resistance.

But this resolution was failed. Of the 22 participating countries, only 11 voted for it: 4 were against, 7 abstained. Since the meeting was closed, the countries that were against were not named, emphasized the editor-in-chief of Details.

However, it is known that, at least, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan were not in favor. With these countries, even before the war, during the settlement there were advances even in defense cooperation. Therefore, some kind of bloc between these countries and Israel is possible.

Geopolitical realities may change

“However, this will not be a bloc that will become an alternative to NATO. Perhaps it will be some kind of alliance under the control of the United States, which would someday unite the allies and satellites of the United States – the UAE, Saudi Arabia,” noted Emil Shleimovich.

In addition, Israel has another common enemy with the UAE and Saudi Arabia – Yemen, which has now become more active.

The emergence of a Middle East NATO in the future is possible, but few will shape it now. Although, according to Shleimovich, in 1-2 years the geopolitical realities in the Middle East may change dramatically

War in the Middle East: Briefly

  • Initially, Israel's ground operation in the Gaza Strip succeeded in encircling Gaza City and dividing the region into two parts – southern and northern. Israel claims that Hamas has lost control of the northern Gaza Strip.
  • Also, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the IDF will remain in the Gaza Strip after the completion of the ground operation. At the same time, the United States has a different opinion: Washington wants to deploy international forces in the Gaza Strip and preserve the Palestinian Authority.
  • At the same time, the war with Hamas costs Israel a lot of money. For a week alone, the country spends approximately 2.3 billion shekels, or $600 million at the average cash rate. This amount represents about 6% of Israel's GDP.
