There have been at least 42 injured people in the city of Yamaguta in recent weeks. Among them are children and the elderly.
Japanese macaques are blamed for the attacks
These monkeys are familiar to most of the country, but such incidents are rare in a short period of time.
At the same time, they first attacked only children and women. Recently, elderly people and adult men have also become targets.
They tried to catch monkeys with traps, but unsuccessfully. The authorities are not sure whether one monkey attacks, or several. People's injuries were different: scratches, bitten legs and arms, bitten neck and stomach.
The monkey even penetrated the kindergarten
There was a case when a four-year-old girl was scratched by a monkey, bursting into an apartment. The animal also entered the kindergarten class. There have been numerous reports from residents that the monkey entered their home through sliding doors or open windows.
One resident said he heard his baby crying on the first floor of the house. When he arrived, the monkey was standing over the child.
Japanese macaques, once a vulnerable species, have recently increased in numbers. They are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a species of concern.
A Yamagata University study suggests that their restoration “provoked serious conflicts between humans and macaques.” In particular, the distance has decreased. Changing cultural attitudes towards macaques, changes in human behavior and changes in forest environments are cited as possible causes of conflicts.
Monkeypox rages around the world
- The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing monkeypox epidemic a global emergency. As of July 22, 16,593 confirmed cases of infection have already been registered in 68 countries. These countries have not previously reported monkeypox. Most of the infections are in Europe.
- By July 23, 70 countries of the spread of the disease had already been recorded. WHO called on the world to send global resources to fight the outbreak. Monkeypox has spread over the years in parts of central and western Africa. But it was not recorded outside the continent.
- The first case of monkeypox infection was also found in Russia. The patient brought it for distribution among Russians from a trip to Europe.
