They dream of feeling like home: how employed Ukrainians live in Poland

by alex

Every second Ukrainian citizen employed in Poland (53%) lives in a double or triple room.

This is evidenced by a study of the housing situation of employed migrants Worker from Ukraine — housing in Poland, conducted by the EWL Migration Platform, RentLito and the Center for East European Studies at the University of Warsaw.

How Ukrainians live in Poland

About 20% of respondents admitted that they live in a room on their own, and every fifth (19%) shares a room with four people. Only 4% of immigrants working in Poland live in six-bed rooms.

— From 2015 to 2020, the most common employee rooms were six-bed rooms, often equipped with bunk beds, and tenants were most often male. However, after the Covid-19 pandemic and Russian aggression against Ukraine, the situation began to change.

For comparison, in 2023, the most popular rooms were double and triple rooms, mainly family rooms with a kitchenette, and in the more expensive version — with private bathroom. Bunk beds in rooms are already perceived as outside the norm, — Maria Dombrovskaya, head of the board of RentLito, commented on the results of the study.

This fact is confirmed by other research results. As many as 61% of Ukrainians working in Poland are willing to pay extra for accommodation in single or double rooms. This is due to the desire to provide a high level of comfort and privacy in the place of residence.

What factors are decisive

The quality of accommodation and neighbors are decisive. Cleanliness is an important positive factor for 96% of respondents.

The overall assessment of the place of residence of employed Ukrainians is influenced by their roommates (95%). Among other factors, respondents equally often indicated: a safe area (92%), distance from the workplace (92%) and the opportunity to live with family (88%).

— Ukrainians attach great importance to the general living conditions in their host country. The majority of respondents (87%) would like them to be similar to the conditions of their home, for example, apartment layout, size and even interior design. Customizing your home to suit your personal tastes, including decorations and kitchen equipment, can help create an environment that resembles your home environment, — told by Maria Dombrovskaya.

Survey Employee from Ukraine — housing in Poland was carried out from November 13 to December 21, 2023 by EWL Group, RentLito and the Center for East European Studios at the University of Warsaw. A total of 312 Ukrainian citizens who work in Poland took part in the study.
