On Wednesday, April 24, Russia vetoed a UN resolution proposed by the United States and Japan. It called for all countries to prevent dangerous nuclear arms races in outer space.

Obviously, the Russians do not like restrictions on threats to use nuclear weapons in any manifestations. After all, such statements and actions are their favorite thing.

Russia vetoed

It is known that 13 out of 15 countries voted for this resolution. Oddly enough, Russia opposed it, while China abstained. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called the resolution “absolutely absurd and politicized.”

As explained at the UN, the resolution would call on all countries not to develop or deploy nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction destruction in space, prohibited by a 1967 international treaty that included the United States and Russia. In particular, it would provide for permission to verify its compliance if necessary.

U.S. Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after the vote that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said Moscow had no intention of putting nuclear weapons in space, but the country's veto showed the government “might be hiding something.”

As before, Putin said that the Kremlin allegedly does not plan to place nuclear weapons in space. The dictator said that his country had allegedly only developed a space potential similar to the American one.

Why is Russia so fundamentally against

CNN journalists reported that Russia is trying to develop nuclear space weapons to destroy satellites. This new weapon will create a pulse of electromagnetic energy and a stream of highly charged particles that will tear through space to disrupt satellites orbiting the Earth.

US Department of Defense and Intelligence for many years have been tracking Russia's efforts for years to develop a wide range of anti-satellite weapons, including “nuclear electromagnetic pulse” or EMP, as the military calls the weapon.

Russia has recently made progress in its efforts to develop ” nuclear electromagnetic pulse.” According to US President Joe Biden, the intelligence community has identified “the ability to launch a system into space that could theoretically cause harm,” but this has not yet happened.

At the same time Experts have since warned of the potential threat posed by electromagnetic pulse nuclear weapons. In particular, this weapon can destroy large constellations of small satellites, in particular SpaceX's Starlink.
