The video on the detention of Igor Dodon was published on the network/Collage of Channel 24 Former President Igor Dodon was detained. Subsequently, a video filmed near the politician's house appeared on the network.

At the exit from Dodon's house, masked men accompanied him. A crowd stood at the gate, chanting: “Jail!”.

The former president did not give any statements to the press – he was immediately put in a white bus.

Why Dodon was detained

The pro-Russian politician is suspected of corruption, illegal enrichment, financing of a political party by a criminal organization and treason. The criminal case against him was initiated on 18 May. Law enforcement officers received a video in which Dodon takes a black package from the former head of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vladimir Plakhotnik. Probably, there was cash inside it.

According to the investigation, Dodon should have used this money for illegal financing of the Socialist Party, which he then headed.

On the morning of May 24, investigators came to the home of the former president with searches. The politician himself was detained for 72 hours. By the way, 3 Moldovan structures immediately took up searches of Dodon’s property:

  • The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office,
  • The National Anti-Corruption Center,
  • Information and Security Service.

Two more defendants were detained as part of the case.

Earlier, the politician said that he could be detained

Even earlier in On the air of the pro-Russian TV channel of Moldova, Dodon said that they could detain him, and search his house. He threatened to get even with the current government for initiating a criminal case.

What is known about Igor Dodon

The pro-Russian president headed Moldova from 2016 to 2020. Earlier, he said that the temporarily occupied Crimea belongs to Russia. For these words, the politician apologized to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, and Dodon himself only noted that he meant under whose authority the peninsula is located.

During his tenure, the politician increasingly removed Moldova from the European Union and brought it closer with Russia.

In the presidential elections in 2020, Dodon lost to pro-European candidate Mai Sandu. After that, the politician filed a series of lawsuits due to alleged “rigging” during the voting. The court rejected them.
