“There must be a hole somewhere”: pressure suddenly dropped in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline at night

by alex

On the night of September 26, a sudden drop in pressure. So far, the causes of the incident are unknown.

This was announced by the representative of the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Ulrich Lissek. The German Ministry of Economy does not understand the reasons and exact facts of the incident either.

It is assumed that the leak occurred in Danish waters.

As Ulrich Lissek noted, it is possible that the gas penetrates into the coastal zone. The gas leak is believed to have occurred southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm.

There must be a hole somewhere, but no one knows where,
he said.

The German authorities are also investigating whether the incident occurred in German territorial waters, but it is difficult to investigate the reasons for the pressure drop in the pipe, because sanctions are in place, there are almost no employees, and funds are frozen. Moreover, there are no Nord Stream 2 personnel in Lubmin, where the pipeline exits in Germany.

A security zone has been established in Denmark, whose exclusive economic zone may be the site of a leak. The Maritime Administration of neighboring Sweden also warned of a possible gas leak in the Baltic Sea.

The sudden drop in pressure in one of the pipes was immediately reported to the naval authorities of:

  • Germany,
  • Denmark,
  • Sweden,
  • Finland,
  • Russia.

What the Süddeutsche Zeitung says about Nord Stream 2

The pipeline consists of two strands and runs for 1230 km from Russia to Germany. Although the pipeline was completed filled with gas, it never imported gas. This was facilitated by the ban of the Federal Government of Germany.

Yes, back in February, shortly before the Russian attack on Ukraine, he suspended the process of approving the completed line. Moreover, even then he noted that commissioning was out of the question. Shortly before the start of a full-scale Russian invasion, the US imposed sanctions on the pipeline.

“Nord Stream 2” : breaking news

  • On August 19, the Bundestag announced the need to launch Nord Stream 2, the commissioning of which was suspended due to Russia's war against Ukraine. This was argued by the fact that “there are no good reasons” not to launch Nord Stream 2.
  • Gerhard Schroeder, famous for warm relations with Putin, also spoke about the need to launch PP-2. According to him, this is necessary to resolve the gas deficit in the country.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine promptly responded to this. Yes, Dmitry Kuleba called such statements “drug addiction”, and the actions of the Germans unreasonable.
  • The President of Poland generally called for dismantling the pipeline. According to him, when Russia is at war with Ukraine, business with the aggressor country should not be conducted.
  • However, despite such statements, Germany found a way to replace the lost supplies of Russian gas and agreed on the supply of gas and diesel from the UAE. The “energy security” agreement stipulates that the UAE will start supplying liquefied natural gas and diesel fuel to Germany.
