The other day a meeting of the G20 took place in India. The final communiqué rightly outraged the Ukrainian community, because it did not directly condemn Russian aggression.

Political scientist Alexey Koshel notedChannel 24that it was about complex diplomatic game, so nothing should be simplified or taken literally.

“It is very important that we do not perceive the decisions and results of this summit solely based on individual statements. Everything is much more complicated,” he noted Wallet.

According to him, the summit had several tasks:

  • influence on Vladimir Putin;
  • preparing a specific format for negotiations;
  • search for possible points of negotiations.

Most likely ,the key task of the G20is to obtain from Moscow a reaction to the summit, a format for the vision of future negotiations and a signal regarding concessions.

What is said in the G20 declaration

The communiqué covered many topics – from energy to the Russian-Ukrainian war. In particular, countries drew attention tohuman suffering and additional negative consequences of the warin Ukraine on global food and energy security.

The summit participants believe that all states must act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter in full, and the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable. Howeverthere is no direct condemnation of Russia as an aggressorin the statement.

At the same time, the G20 welcomes constructive initiatives that support “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

  • Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Speaker Oleg Nikolenko believes that the text of the G20 communiqué is weak and proposed his own version. In particular, it is necessary to directly name the aggressor – Russia.
  • US President Joe Biden explained that the G20 compromise declaration is related to the positions of Russia and China, which are equal members of the G20. But it is important that the countries supported the principles of the UN Charter.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron generally believes that the G20 communiqué was a diplomatic loss for Russia. According to him, the declaration confirmed the isolation of the aggressor country.
