There has been no Ukrainian ambassador in the UK for more than six months: what is the problem with the appointment?

Более полугода в Великобритании нет посла Украины: в чем проблема назначения

From the summer of 2023 in There is no Ukrainian ambassador in London. Great Britain is not a country where you can holiday. The state requires every second work in many areas. In addition, there are many requirements for a representative of Ukraine in a foreign country.

That is why, as explained by 24 Channel former Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko, the leadership of our state is trying to select a person who will meet the vision of the British. When London receives an ambassador, he understands the level of attitude towards himself.

What is the problem with the appointment

According to Prystaiko, due to many personnel changes that have recently occurred in our state, we have begun to move faster and more creatively. However, we have lost traditions. There is a rule in diplomacy not to reveal the name of an ambassador until another country agrees to his appointment. But as soon as some information leaks onto the network, anonymous telegram channels or individuals immediately write about it.

The problem is precisely this. We would have to protect ourselves and Great Britain, because she has the right to say: “No, we don’t need this ambassador, we are waiting for another,” Prystaiko said.

Appointment ambassadorship occurs as follows:

  • the Minister of Foreign Affairs proposes to the President a candidate for the post of future ambassador;
  • then he is secretly sent to the country for several months so that Great Britain conditionally agrees on his candidacy;
  • after approval, the new ambassador is publicly introduced at the official level in both states.

If you report last names in order to reduce the degree of political discussion, then you can stumble upon other problems. For example, a country will say that there are a lot of rumors and conversations around this person, so they will wait until they propose someone else.

This tradition you just need to remember and conditionally respect her,” the ex-minister emphasized.

Does the absence of an ambassador affect support

Although there has been no Ukrainian ambassador in the UK for about six months, the country continues to support Ukraine. We had fears of a change in Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but with the arrival of Rishi Sunak the situation remains stable. According to Prystaiko, the two countries have a common theme in which everything comes down to the main thing – Ukraine must defeat Russia.

Besides, the UK is not looking for tricky diplomatic words. Foreign Secretary David Cameron recently said that Ukraine must win and Russia must lose.

All who want to stand with us, please stand – this is our position,” Vadim Prystaiko quoted Cameron’s words.

They wrote approximately these conditions into the bilateral security agreement in early January 2024. If Ukraine is left with such partners, we will deal with all the others.

On the importance of the ambassador

The role of the ambassador is key in any country. The position allows you to rise to the level of political communication. You can communicate with the royal family, the prime minister and other high-ranking officials. The representative of Ukraine is constantly in dialogue with journalists, who are a very respected profession in London. They do work that unites British society and allows them to be a “channel” through which everyone understands “Britain supports Ukraine.”

Wake up in the morning and you see that there are so many yellow and blue flags in Britain, as if you were in Ukraine. Everyone supports you. A deputy who does not press a button, he understands that the whole nation knows that Ukraine needs to be helped. When we reach this level in all partner countries, assistance will increase and we will finally be able to drive the aggressor out of our land,” Prystaiko concluded.
