There are certain levers of influence over Hungary that the European Union can use. Recently, a discussion has begun about limiting the rights of Budapest for violating the fundamental principles of the EU.
This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin in 2014 — 2019in a comment to ICTV Facts journalist Oksana Mikhailova. He noted that the European Commission has significant influence on Hungary.
— The European Commission actually has. But the EU countries have the main role. A discussion has begun again about limiting the country's voting rights, which violates the fundamental principles of the EU. So far, Hungary has been punished with money. They can be punished by being deprived of their rights. This will be a unique precedent in the history of the EU, — Klimkin noticed.
It is dangerous for Orban to remain in the EU alone
Previously, the Hungarian Prime Minister hoped that Poland would be his partner. However, with the new government this has become a distant prospect. Viktor Orban understands perfectly well that it is dangerous to remain alone in the EU, says the former head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

— It’s Macron or Scholz who can play the game “we are the coolest in the EU”. He (Orban, — Ed.) has economic and political leverage. There were fears that circles within the EU who are for our integration, but would not like to rush, would use Orban as a scapegoat. Both the Germans and the French played a fairly clear European game. We still have a very difficult process ahead when Orban uses his right to block, — Klimkin is convinced.
Will Ukraine be hindered
He calculated that Orbán has at least 80 official reasons, which concern only the European Union, to be able to put a spoke in the wheels.
In his opinion, Orban will definitely do this, because the Kremlin is blackmailing him with preferential prices for gas and oil.
— But he will not block financial assistance. There are backup options there. They're not perfect, but they're not bad. But for us, €50 billion is important, not the financial mechanics of how it will be done. I see two options that will work if Orban blocks this. He is playing a political game. It is important for him to maintain his position next year until the parliamentary elections. He is still playing for his voters and quite consistently, — said Klimkin.
Pavel Klimkin also spoke about what to expect from the pro-Russian authorities of countries such as Hungary and Slovakia, as well as what is happening in the US Congress with the vote on providing assistance to Ukraine. More details can be found in the interview he gave to ICTV Facts journalist Oksana Mikhailova.
