There are sore points: how to perceive Fico's position on the future of Ukraine in the EU and NATO Melania Golembyovska

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed a negative attitude towards Ukraine's accession to NATO, but supports our country's accession to the EU. However, he is not a sincere friend of our country and makes such statements for certain reasons.

Oleg Rybachuk, chairman of the analytical and advocacy organization “Center for Joint Actions”, told 24 Kanal about this, noting that Fico now has certain sore points, which is why he weakened his position. However, he will continue to play along with the Kremlin.

How should Fico's position on Ukraine's future in the EU and NATO be perceived

The chairman of the analytical and advocacy organization explained that Slovakia is not a country that can be a partner for Ukraine and is not the best member of the EU.

Fico's rhetoric makes it clear that he is much more favorable to Viktor Orban. They are Eurosceptics who are trying to weaken the European Union as much as possible and play along with Moscow. Russia does not benefit from Ukraine's integration into the EU and our country's admission to NATO.

However, the economic situation plays a role here. Slovakia is in a rather difficult economic situation and depends on the EU, including financially.

When they (Orban and Fico – 24 Kanal) start to “burn out”, they understand that they need to stop and not be open opponents of the common policy of the EU and Ukraine, – Rybachuk noted.

The fact that Fico is now “giving in” means that he has sore points that depend on Ukraine as well. In particular, the energy supply system and gas pipelines. Despite this, he is trying to propose initiatives aimed at peace, but to prevent Ukraine from becoming a member of NATO.

Fico has definitely decided that he does not want to become a vocal opponent of Ukraine's European integration. He has his own position, he voices it, but now he is trying to restrain his political forces and pretend that he is ready to help Ukraine. However, he is definitely not our friend, – noted the chairman of the analytical and advocacy organization.

Recall that Fico said that he would block Ukraine's accession to NATO as long as he is in power. This, in his opinion, will cause a third world war. In addition, he called on Europe to abandon “Russophobia”.
