“There are only about a dozen of them”: what the Russians lost along with the Nebo-M radar Anzhelika Galesevich

The Defense Forces struck the Russian Nebo-M radar station with ATACMS ballistic missiles. The time and location of the hit are not yet known, this is being hidden for certain reasons.

The installation is quite valuable, Russia has about 10 of them left. Reserve Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, pilot-instructor, military expert Roman Svitan told Channel 24 that Ukraine is creating an “air corridor”.

What the Russians lost with the Nebo-M

According to the pilot instructor, Ukraine is trying to gain an advantage in the airspace. The mechanisms for gaining this advantage are different. One of them is the destruction of radar stations, such as Nebo-M. It is important to hit them so that Russian operational headquarters and points cannot work with the information transmitted by the above-mentioned installation.

The radar helped the Russians to quite accurately detect aerodynamic and ballistic objects at medium and high altitudes within a radius of several hundred kilometers. At the same time, the destruction of Nebo-M will now allow Ukraine to effectively use Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles.

The Russians have only 10 working systems of this type left, they are located throughout Russia. The cost of such a radar is more than 100 million dollars. The overwhelming majority of components were brought from foreign countries.

The Nebo-M does not have an anti-aircraft missile system. It is a locator that sees very far. There are few of them, and they are really scattered across Russia for 10 thousand kilometers to record targets at a certain distance. They see objects flying at low altitudes and flat trajectories. These are the “eyes”. The data is transmitted to the General Staff so that they can decide who will shoot down the target, what it is, where it is going and how best to eliminate it, – said Roman Svitan.

The General Staff may not report the direction and time of destruction of the Nebo-M due to the fact that many mechanisms were involved in the operation that helped track the position of the radar station. The information is provided only in closed access so that the enemy cannot, taking into account certain signs, identify the sources that provide the data.

Interesting! This is the third known fact of the defeat of the Nebo-M complexes by the Defense Forces. Before this, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had a similar success in 2022 in the South and most recently – on May 28, 2024 at the airfield of the temporarily occupied Luhansk.
