There are facts of torture of Ukrainian prisoners held by both Russia itself and its militants, – UN

Facts of torture of prisoners by both Russia and pro-Russian militants of Donbass have already been documented . In addition, the Russians still do not allow representatives of international organizations to see prisoners.

This was stated on September 9 by the head of the UN Monitoring Mission for Human Rights in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner. She also emphasized that the captured Ukrainians are in inadequate conditions.

They told about the situation in Yelenovka

According to the UN representative, they were not granted access to prisoners both in the territory under the occupation of Russia, and in the regions controlled by its armed forces. However, it is already known that the medical situation in the Yelenovskaya colony is terrible. There, many Ukrainian prisoners of war suffer from infectious diseases, in particular hepatitis A and tuberculosis. However, this information could not be verified.

Even more worrying is the fact that there is documented evidence of torture and physical abuse against Ukrainian prisoners by the Russian military, as well as members of armed formations,” Bogner said.

She added that, in terms of the treatment of prisoners of war, some issues could escalate into war crimes. First of all, this concerns torture and ill-treatment of prisoners of war.
